How the calculator works: the 15-9-4 rule
Cats mature fast early on, then age more gradually — which is why the old “multiply by seven” myth doesn’t hold up. Veterinary references use what’s often called the “15-9-4” rule: the first year of a cat’s life counts as about 15 human years, the second adds 9 (24 human years total), and every year after that adds roughly 4, as explained by IAMS and confirmed by the AVMA figures cited by PetMD. To calculate cat years for any cat aged two or older, the shortcut is: human age = (cat age − 2) × 4 + 24. When are cats full grown, and when is a cat a senior?
Most cats reach close to their full adult size by about 12 months, which is when the AAHA/AAFP framework moves them from kitten into the young-adult stage.
