Human Years to Dog Years Calculator: How Old Is My Dog?

A one-year-old dog is roughly the equivalent of a 15-year-old human — not a 7-year-old, as the old rule suggests. The second year adds about 9 more human years (so a two-year-old dog is around 24), and after that each dog year is worth roughly 4 to 7 human years depending on the dog’s size, according to the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. This human years to dog years calculator uses that size-adjusted approach so you get a realistic number instead of a rough multiply-by-seven guess.

The formula the calculator uses

The headline figure follows the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and American Kennel Club (AKC) guideline as relayed by the AKC and UC Davis: the first year counts as about 15 human years, the second adds about 9, and every year after that adds roughly 4 (small dogs), 5 (medium), 6 (large) or 7 (giant) human years. The calculator also shows a second, science-based number from a 2020 University of California San Diego study, which measured DNA methylation in 104 Labrador Retrievers and produced the formula human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31 (Wang et al., 2020). Both methods beat the outdated “how many years is a dog year” shortcut of multiplying by 7.

How many human years is 1 dog year?

There is no single answer, because dogs do not age at a steady rate — that is exactly why “how many dog years are in one human year” has no clean number. The first dog year is worth about 15 human years, so one early dog year is far more than seven. By contrast, a single dog year in the senior stage adds only about 4 to 7 human years. On average across a whole lifetime the old ×7 rule lands in the right ballpark, but it badly overstates puppyhood and understates the fast aging of large breeds. As WebMD notes, a medium 7-year-old dog is about 47–49 in human years, not 49 by coincidence of any tidy ratio.

Dog age chart in human years (by weight)

Use this dog age to human age chart as a quick reference. Notice how the columns are identical for the first two years — all dogs mature at a similar pace early on — then diverge, with giant breeds pulling ahead:

Dog age Small (≤20 lb) Medium (21–50 lb) Large (51–90 lb) Giant (>90 lb)
1 year 15 15 15 15
2 years 24 24 24 24
3 years 28 29 30 31
5 years 36 39 42 45
7 years 44 49 54 59
8 years 48 54 60 66
10 years 56 64 72 80
13 years 68 79 90 101
15 years 76 89 102 115

So a 5-year-old in dog years is about 36 human years for a small breed but 45 for a giant one, and a 13-year-old dog ranges from roughly 68 to over 100 depending on size. These are AVMA/AKC size-adjusted estimates; every dog is an individual.

How to use the calculator

  1. Choose a direction: Dog → Human to see your dog’s age in human years, or Human → Dog to find out how old you’d be as a dog.
  2. Enter the age. For puppies, switch the unit to months (e.g. “how old is 4 months in dog years”).
  3. Pick your dog’s size band by weight — this is the single biggest factor in aging.
  4. Read the headline number (AVMA size-adjusted) plus the science formula and life stage. Open the chart to compare sizes at a glance.

How it works: Year 1 ≈ 15 human years, year 2 adds ≈ 9 (total ~24), then ≈ 4–7 human years per year depending on size. The "science" figure uses the UCSD epigenetic formula 16·ln(age)+31.

Frequently asked questions

Is dog years a real thing? Yes — dogs genuinely age faster than humans, especially early on — but the specific “1 dog year = 7 human years” ratio is a myth. Veterinary bodies use a curved, size-adjusted method instead.

What is 5 in dog years? For a 5-year-old dog, that’s about 36 human years (small), 39 (medium), 42 (large) or 45 (giant). If you mean a human aged 5, that maps to roughly a 4-month-old puppy on the dog scale.

How old is a 7-year-old dog in human years? Around 44 (small) to 59 (giant) human years. Larger breeds are often considered senior by this age, while small dogs are not, per the AVMA guidance.

How many dog years are in one human year? It depends on life stage. In the first year, roughly 15; in senior years, closer to 4–7. There is no constant conversion, which is why a calculator that bends with age is more accurate than a fixed multiplier.

Small dog years to human years — why different? Small breeds live longer and age more slowly after puberty, so they add fewer human years per dog year (about 4) than giant breeds (about 7). A 10-year-old small dog is around 56; a giant is around 80.

How can I tell how old my dog is if I don’t know? A vet can estimate age from teeth wear, eye clarity and muscle tone. Once you have an approximate age, plug it into the calculator above.
